Bathtub Restoration – When You Can’t Remove Your Old Bathtub
If your current bathtub is not attractive, most likely your first impulse is to replace it. But what if you’re not able to remove the tub? The situation is not hopeless; you can either install a new bathtub liner or refinish the surface. Unfortunately, neither option is a DIY project. You’ll also need to consider cost vs. quality. While refinishing is cheaper (approximately $200 to $500), a new tub liner will last longer (about $1,000). Whichever option you choose, you will probably want to replace the old fixtures with new ones to complete your bathtub’s transformation.
Refinishing the Surface
If your bathtub’s surface is damaged or worn, you can have it refinished through a reglazing process. First, the tub’s surface is thoroughly scraped. After application of an etching solution to dull the old finish, the bathtub is sanded thoroughly. Finally, a new polyurethane finish is sprayed on the surface and then polished. To prevent the spread of sanding dust through your house, take proper precautions such as closing off adjacent rooms or using a window exhaust fan.
Installing a Bathtub Liner
You can have a tub liner custom-made that will fit over your old bathtub’s surface. After taking measurements of your old tub, using the exact location of plumbing cutouts and the manufacturer’s specifications for the contours, the installer makes a matching acrylic model. After being trimmed to fit, the liner is slipped over the old bathtub and fastened with adhesive. If you want, you can have matching wall panels made and installed at the same time as the tub liner.
